PRESENCE OF MIND

To stay determinedly alert is fraught
With human frailty's happenstance;
And action lacking consciousness of thought
Must risk the treachery of chance.

Mere reflex claims no power to ensure
An outcome matching our desire;
Such close approximation to procure,
A present mind's what we require.
